Welcome

Following the first workshop held in Edmonton, in April 2005, this second conference, which will be held in Montreal, June 2006, will be a continuation of the essential skills projects and will allow seven Canadian based research teams to present the results of their studies. These workshops will create a conducive atmosphere where research teams as well as their partners will be able to exchange and share ideas and information on potential prospects, future perspectives and outcomes as well as constructive and fruitful comments for this area of research. The projects were funded by the strategic joint program on Essential Skills of the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) and the Human Resources and Skills Development (HRSD) of Canada.

The following Essential skills are at the basis of all subsequently acquired skills in an individual's personal and professional life (HRSD, 2005):

  • Reading Text
  • Document Use
  • Numeracy
  • Writing
  • Oral Communication
  • Working with others
  • Thinking Skills
  • Computer Use
  • Continuous Learning

These skills allow individuals to participate actively in making daily decisions within their communities.

This workshop is the end product of a two year research program whose goal is to share research results with a greater population: the university community, representatives in the business and trade-union sectors in education, private organisations, provincial governments, territorial and federal ministries, such as representatives from HRSD. Consequently, researchers, experts, key speakers in the development of training policies and students of various areas of Canada will have the opportunity to express themselves on issues surrounding the use of Essential skills.
